Why the French battlehotels rose skyward

The tall "battlehotel" design emerged from a fleet shaped around seeing and engaging numerous smaller threats rather than a settled battleship role.

Notes

French battleships were repeatedly paused and redesigned as the Jeune École debate changed their perceived purpose. They also represented national status, while France had to divide resources between its imperial navy and an army defending extensive land borders. Tall structures offered a proposed advantage against numerous smaller craft: their height extended visibility across the curved horizon and allowed downward fire. The same height increased the target presented in a battleship engagement, where a lower profile could be advantageous. The resulting designs reflected conflicting demands for flotilla defence, imperial reach, and capital-ship status.
