Chapter ยท 25:14-29:18

Fremantle as a multinational submarine base

Secret Fleets offers a guide to the British, American, and Dutch submarines operating through Fremantle during the Second World War.

Notes

Lynn Cairns's account of Fremantle's wartime submarine base records the scale of its multinational traffic. A quoted patrol by HMS Thrasher conveys both submarine successes and the danger of depth-charge counterattack. The book's lists distinguish the British, American, and Dutch boats operating through the port. Although no Royal Australian Navy submarines appear in those lists, Australian personnel contributed within the British submarine force, so national labels alone do not capture the base's Commonwealth character.
