A modernized Polish Tiger at Denmark Strait

An alternate-history exercise uses a modernized Tiger to show how an additional veteran capital ship could have changed the Denmark Strait action.

Question

What might happen if a modernized HMS Tiger served with the Free Polish Navy at Denmark Strait?

Short answer

Manning it would be difficult, but its speed, veteran crew, and additional heavy guns could have overwhelmed Bismarck much sooner.

Notes

The hypothetical begins with the serious crew burden of transferring a large battlecruiser to the Free Polish Navy; manning Tiger could consume much of its available personnel. If that problem were solved, the ship's speed and eight 13.5-inch guns would add another fast capital unit to Hood and Prince of Wales. Tiger's armour would not make it safe from Bismarck, but a modernized veteran ship could deliver more reliable fire than the incompletely worked-up Prince of Wales. Hits accumulate even when none is immediately fatal, so a third British capital ship could turn Bismarck's existing damage into a crisis. The scenario illustrates how force concentration and crew readiness can matter as much as comparing individual ship specifications.
