Chapter · 3:17:40-3:21:06

Gustav wins at Frederikshamn but misses the larger prize

Gustav III personally won with the archipelago fleet, yet delay and a granted respite allowed the Russians to reinforce the fort and deny Sweden a decisive capture.

Notes

Frustrated by Prince Charles, Gustav took direct command and used a somewhat stronger coastal fleet effectively. The victory did not deliver its full strategic promise because an attack one day earlier might have caught the fort undermanned. Gustav then granted the Russian commander time to consider surrender, and reinforcements used the respite to prepare the defenses. His energy did not translate into capture of the most valuable objective.
