Hasler's Norway decorations and the limits of his service record

Hasler's landing duties and unusually senior decoration prompt a suspicion of earlier specialist work, but that explanation remains unproved.

Notes

Hasler entered the Royal Marines in 1932 at eighteen and was serving as Fleet Landing Officer at Scapa Flow in 1940. He then worked with the French Foreign Legion during the Norwegian campaign, helping coordinate its operations with British forces. He received an OBE, a mention in dispatches, and the French Croix de Guerre. The limited account of his duties does not explain precisely what earned those decorations. His rank, responsibilities, and direct appointment as an OBE prompt a suspicion that he had undertaken specialist work before joining the Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment. That explanation remains unproved, with no documentary evidence identifying a concealed assignment. At twenty-eight, he planned and commanded Operation Frankton.
