Chapter ยท 1:21:34-1:24:51

What is known - and uncertain - about the raiders' deaths

Six captured Marines were executed and two died from exposure, even though locations and dates in the surviving execution record remain uncertain.

Notes

Wallace and Ewart were executed on 11 December, but surviving evidence challenges the site long commemorated by a plaque. The dates and location of the killings of Laver, Mills, McKinnon, and Conway are also uncertain, although their execution under the Commando Order is not. Erich Raeder apparently recorded that the uniformed Marines' treatment violated international law, and McKinnon had received hospital care for an infected knee before being killed. Conger's crew instead died from exposure after the capsize, producing a final toll of six executed prisoners, two deaths from the elements, and two survivors.
