Surviving design records preserve only part of the debate

Missing design variants and incomplete Admiralty minutes make the Queen Elizabeth decision process harder to reconstruct than the surviving sketches imply.

Notes

Warship design records rarely preserve every variant explored or every reason a board rejected one. The surviving Queen Elizabeth drawings and papers are fragments from a much larger decision process. Many Admiralty Board conversations were never minuted, while formal minutes could present the agreed position after the fact and omit the debate itself. An archival dream sketch or official minute cannot by itself settle what the Navy could, wanted to, or intended to build.
