The first British capture of Trincomalee took place during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War. That conflict overlapped with the American War of Independence and a wider effort by several powers to exploit Britain's commitments around the world. The Dutch joined a coalition environment in which Britain faced pressure across multiple theatres. Unlike several of Britain's other enemies, however, the Netherlands emerged from this phase markedly weaker. The 1782 operation was an early warning of the imperial vulnerability that became decisive in 1795.
