Why 14-inch wing turrets would be transitional

Very large wing turrets were theoretically possible, but their structural demands and the arrival of triple turrets made a long-lived off-centre arrangement unlikely.

Question

Were 14-inch wing turrets viable on a Dreadnought-type ship?

Short answer

They were theoretically possible, but triple centreline turrets would probably displace the arrangement after only a few ships.

Notes

A 14-inch wing-turret layout was theoretically buildable despite the large off-centre barbette openings it would require. The arrangement would probably lose its appeal once designers gained confidence with larger triple turrets. A first ship and perhaps a few successors might preserve the wing layout while the newer mounting matured. It is a plausible transitional branch of dreadnought design rather than a stable alternative to centreline concentration.
