Question

What if Admiral Hipper-class cruisers carried four triple 8-inch turrets?

Short answer

They would be formidable heavy cruisers and might provoke a Royal Navy response built around 9.2-inch guns.

Notes

Four triple 8-inch turrets would turn the proposed Admiral Hipper-class ship into an unusually powerful heavy cruiser. Such a large battery could push the Royal Navy to answer with a 9.2-inch-gun cruiser. The exchange shows how one enlarged cruiser design could move competition into a heavier gun category. It does not claim that this response was historically planned.
