Why one continuous SSBN patrol needs four boats

Continuous deterrence is a force-generation problem: the boat on patrol depends on others in transit, refit, and reserve.

Notes

The Royal Navy's four ballistic-missile submarines show why a single continuous output requires several hulls. One boat can be on patrol while another is moving to or from station and a third undergoes major refit. The fourth provides resilience for minor maintenance, preparation, or an unexpected defect elsewhere in the cycle. Fleet numbers are therefore an availability calculation, since every commissioned vessel cannot be deployed at once.
