Specialist design histories and the archival record

Rebuilding the Royal Navy since 1945 prompts a useful warning: even respected technical histories advance interpretations that can be checked against surviving archival files.

Notes

D. K. Brown and George Moore's Rebuilding the Royal Navy shows why specialist histories should be read critically. A naval architect who knew the field could agree passionately with Brown on one issue and disagree just as strongly on another, since professional experience shapes how technical evidence is interpreted. The surviving National Archives files can also support a different account from Brown's. The book remains valuable as a specialist argument whose disputed claims can be tested against contemporary records and other expert perspectives.
