HMS Foudroyant captures Pégase

Foudroyant became the ship most closely associated with the middle of Jervis's career and helped establish him with multiple senior patrons. During operations around the Third Battle of Ushant, she outsailed the rest of the force far enough to spot a French convoy escorted by Pégase and Protecteur. Foudroyant then fought Pégase for about forty-five minutes before boarding and forcing her surrender, while suffering only a handful of wounded. The capture brought prize money and a baronetcy, removed Jervis's earlier financial worries, and supplied the conspicuous success that supported his future promotion to flag rank.
