Bodyguard invented more than the well-known First U.S. Army Group. That formation supported Fortitude South and the expected assault around the Pas-de-Calais. Fortitude North used a fictitious British Fourth Army associated with Edinburgh Castle to make an invasion of Norway appear credible. Giving each false operation a headquarters and formation structure made its radio traffic and apparent preparations easier for German intelligence to interpret as a real campaign.

Fortitude gives false invasions their own armies
The fictitious First U.S. Army Group supports the Pas-de-Calais story while a less famous British Fourth Army based around Edinburgh sustains the threat to Norway.
