Forrest Sherman brings the new-build case

Forrest Sherman construction replaced worn wartime hulls and supported Tartar, ASROC, and gun experiments before providing the basis for Charles F. Adams.

Notes

Forrest Sherman construction answered the need to replace wartime destroyers that had endured heavy use and were increasingly difficult to adapt. Built between 1953 and 1959, the class carried three 5-inch guns, four 3-inch guns, Hedgehog, and 21-inch torpedo tubes in its initial fit. Later Tartar and ASROC modifications explored different missile and ASW capabilities, while USS Hull tested the Mark 71 8-inch gun. At roughly 4,000 tons full load, these ships remained smaller than later American destroyers. Cruisers still performed many of the fleet's presence duties, allowing the destroyers to retain a narrower role. The design also provided the basis for Charles F. Adams.
