Australia converts Formidable for carrier-squadron command

Australian yards substitute high-quality steel for scarce armor plate while enlarging the carrier's island for an admiral and staff.

Notes

Formidable received later work at Captain Cook Dock and Garden Island, with labor added from Cockatoo Island Dockyard. Australia had no suitable armor plate available, so the yards used high-quality steel instead. The substitute steel was not hardened in the same way as armor plate. The island was enlarged to provide an admiral's cabin, space for staff officers, and a radar workshop. These additions prepared Formidable to serve as command ship for the First Aircraft Carrier Squadron, whose staff required working and living space aboard.
