Chapter · 6:49-9:34

Formidable as a battle-fleet support carrier

Formidable illustrates a Royal Navy carrier doctrine built around reconnaissance, counter-reconnaissance, fighter cover, anti-submarine patrols, and a retained surface-strike option.

Notes

Formidable worked within the battle formation and maintained several continuous flying tasks. Her aircraft scouted, disrupted enemy reconnaissance, kept fighter and anti-submarine patrols aloft, and remained available for surface strikes. The Albacores could also support night bombardment by dropping flares over Tripoli for the battleships. Launching and recovering aircraft required the carrier to leave the battle line, creating periods when she was exposed with only limited escort protection.
