What Formidabile’s absence meant at Lissa

Formidabile’s absence removed a well-trained ship before the fleet battle, but larger command failures still shaped the Italian defeat.

Notes

Damage and casualties kept Formidabile out of the fleet battle on 20 July, and the wounded were transferred to the hospital ship Washington before the warship withdrew towards Ancona. This removed one of Italy’s better-trained crews and a captain capable of acting independently. The counterfactual remains limited: the ship probably could not have repaired the Italian fleet’s fundamental command-and-control problems, though it might have made the Austro-Hungarian victory less complete. The ship’s ability to act from broad instructions made its absence more consequential than a simple reduction in hull numbers.
