Using selected eyewitness voices as historical evidence

Forgotten Voices of Dunkirk offers first-hand testimony while raising a useful warning: every edited oral-history collection reflects choices about which voices to preserve.

Notes

Joshua Levine's book belongs to the Forgotten Voices oral-history series and is built mainly from testimony by people who experienced the campaign. Such collections preserve valuable testimony, although some volumes can make the supposedly forgotten voices feel selectively chosen. The photographs and quotations give direct access to individual experience, but an editor still determines which experiences appear together. Vivid primary evidence does not amount to a complete operational account. Editorial selection shapes the history presented through eyewitness quotation.
