The forgotten variety of American ironclads

Have most American Civil War ironclads been forgotten apart from Monitor?

Yes; many unusual and attractive designs are overlooked, and more deserve individual study.

Monitor's fame has overshadowed a much broader field of Union ironclad designs. Many have been forgotten despite their number. Some stand out for their appearance, while others are interesting for their unusual designs. Their variety makes individual Civil War ironclads worth studying rather than treating Monitor as the whole story.
