Why sophisticated foreign design ideas could hinder Soviet construction

German and Italian influences offered ambitious engineering, but their complexity was a poor match for Soviet industrial recovery.

Notes

German engineering often pursued a technically perfect solution even when a simpler one would work, an approach illustrated here through an overcomplicated drinking-glass analogy. That degree of refinement was difficult to deliver even with Germany's engineering support and maritime infrastructure. Italian hull forms brought their own demands through elaborate welding and shaping. Soviet industry was rebuilding its labour, management, and production systems after revolution, emigration, and repression. A simpler design could have delivered more usable naval power than an elegant one that Soviet yards could not construct reliably.
