What follows if Force Z survives its December 1941 engagement?
Short answerSingapore and Malaya probably hold longer, Allied submarines gain a better base, and Japan must eventually commit carriers against the surviving force.
NotesSurviving fast capital ships would let the Royal Navy use older battleships for coastal bombardment against Japan's vulnerable Malayan supply route. Delaying the advance could preserve Singapore as a submarine base and complicate operations against Sumatra and the Dutch East Indies. American submarines operating from a stocked British base might also resolve torpedo defects sooner through shared engineering experience. Just as important, Admiral Tom Phillips and his staff would remain available to coordinate a command structure that struggled to turn plans into decisions. A major carrier battle would still become likely once Japan could concentrate its carriers in early 1942.
