Combining scattered Allied ships creates a practical command problem aboard the flagship. Doorman's cruiser lacked enough space for the staff needed to coordinate a multinational force. Different communications equipment and personnel with different language skills all had to fit aboard. Prince of Wales and Repulse were large ships equipped for flagship duties, although Repulse's facilities had not been upgraded recently. Their survival would therefore improve the coalition's ability to communicate as well as its fighting strength.
