Chapter ยท 15:41-23:46

Deterrence, Singapore, and the composition of Force Z

Force Z's forward deployment signaled resolve but exposed an incomplete formation built around Prince of Wales, Repulse, and too few escorts.

Notes

A carrier and capital ship supplied complementary capabilities within a deterrent task force. Ceylon offered a position farther from the immediate crisis, where Prince of Wales and Repulse could appear alongside four R-class battleships and Hermes as a larger regional force. Churchill favored Singapore to demonstrate offensive intent and burden sharing with Australia and the United States. That forward base placed the ships in the battle before they had a clear picture of Japanese movements. Their missing cruiser and thin destroyer screen also exposed the limits of the deployment. A carrier would probably have brought an AA cruiser and additional destroyers with it.
