Prince of Wales had recovered from the Bismarck action, restored her guns, and could make an officially stated speed of roughly 28 knots. Her ten 14-inch guns made her a powerful unit. Repulse had received modernization work, but she lacked Renown's extensive reconstruction in part because British rearmament planning had assumed a war beginning in 1942. She remained a useful battlecruiser with an official speed of 31 knots, especially for a force that needed speed. The attached destroyers were also capable ships. The missing carrier and cruiser left those individual strengths within an incomplete task force.
