The striking force both sides left outside Jutland

The final comparison asks what unavailable, refitting, or uncalled ships reveal about readiness and confidence before Jutland.

Notes

The final comparison covers ships both navies could theoretically have brought, including German vessels awaiting readiness and British units in refit or left out by command judgment. Royal Sovereign is the clearest British example: a modern 15-inch battleship withheld because its crew was not considered ready. Jellicoe also declined to summon every available cruiser and destroyer from other duties because those ships had not trained as part of the Grand Fleet. Even so, the British ships left outside the battle could have constituted a formidable fleet by many contemporary standards. Battle strength therefore depended on the force a navy could equip, train, assemble, and confidently employ at the chosen moment, rather than its paper inventory.
