The 1939 Force K opposed surface raiders in an economic sea-control role. In 1941 and 1942, the name referred to surface raiding forces that practised sea denial. They targeted freighters supplying North Africa. Their purpose was to make North African resupply unreliable for the Regia Marina (Italian navy) in particular, and for the Axis powers more broadly.
