The second Force K should be understood through its destroyers as well as its cruisers. Four destroyers, including two Tribals, took the leading role in aggressive patrols. They created a moving barrier intended to track down and sink Axis traffic before it could pass. This destroyer emphasis distinguishes the 1942 force from the earlier cruiser-heavy Malta formation.
