Force H existed to cover the western Mediterranean after the French fleet ceased to be a reliable ally. If that fleet instead remains active from North African bases, Britain does not need the same independent formation at Gibraltar. Ark Royal, a battlecruiser, and numerous destroyers become available for other operations or maintenance. The release also reduces the relentless tempo that historically prevented Ark Royal from receiving a proper refit.

French control of the western Mediterranean frees Force H
A large friendly French force around North Africa removes the emergency that historically tied Ark Royal, a battlecruiser, and escorts to Force H.
