Force D used modified lighters brought from Aden to create an improvised harbor for the return to British Somaliland. The operation was one of the early successful opposed amphibious landings of the war. The landing force did not have to wait for a developed port to be captured intact before sustaining itself ashore. Bringing port capacity forward turned a difficult coast into a usable operational base.
