Why food matters so much to submarine morale

A crew cut off from daylight and changing scenery depends unusually heavily on food for variety, routine, and morale.

Notes

Submariners cannot look outside to judge where they are, and much of their environment remains unchanged throughout a patrol. Food therefore becomes an unusually important source of variety and morale aboard a boat. Submarine cooks must turn finite stores into hearty, appealing meals over a long deployment, making their skill an operational contribution rather than a domestic afterthought. Menu choices also interact with habitability because odors, waste systems, and confined living conditions cannot be separated from crew endurance. Undersea effectiveness depends on sustaining people as well as concealing machinery.
