HMS Flying Fish rescues the Japanese legation

A British survey sloop rescued surviving Japanese diplomats after their escape from the Imo Mutiny.

Notes

Members of the Japanese legation burned sensitive documents before escaping through a rear gate as thousands of mutineers approached. They fled through heavy rain, lost six people, and carried five seriously wounded colleagues to a small boat. After three days at sea, HMS Flying Fish found the survivors and carried them to Nagasaki. The rescue placed a British survey sloop at a decisive moment in Japanese-Korean relations and shows how routine imperial deployments could acquire sudden diplomatic importance.
