What a flying battleship would do to air power

A hypothetical flying battleship tests how lift, speed, missile defences and concentrated combat power would change the roles of conventional aircraft.

Question

If a battleship could fly, what additional military roles could it perform?

Short answer

It could combine heavy strike, sensing, and air-defence functions, but the technology needed to make it practical would transform the rest of warfare as well.

Notes

A modern flying battleship carrying large guns, missiles and an Aegis-like combat system could dominate a wide volume of airspace. Earlier versions would still need faster aircraft for rapid response and combined attacks against defences equipped to engage both large and small targets. Ordinary lighter-than-air lift cannot support the assumed armour and weapon load, so the scenario requires a fictional lift mechanism or major advances in materials and propulsion. Those advances would also change the aircraft and countermeasures around it. Conventional air forces could lose some roles if smaller warships could fly as well. Concentrating so much combat power in one or two vessels would also make their loss especially costly.
