How an Italian Flutto-class silhouette became a generic toy U-boat

Postwar toy branding helped an Italian submarine outline circulate internationally as the familiar shape of a German U-boat.

Notes

Many toy and model U-boats do not closely resemble German Type VII or Type IX submarines. An Italian company used the Flutto class as the basis for one of its postwar toy designs. Because the Italian class was less familiar internationally, the product was rebranded under the more recognizable U-boat label and widely copied. Commercial models can shape popular memory even when their labels flatten real design differences.
