A simple minesweeper built to survive a blast

The Flower sloops combined a straightforward single-screw, triple-expansion layout with protection intended to limit mine damage.

Notes

The Flower sloops were originally designed as simple minesweepers, with a single screw and triple-expansion engines. Three hull layers around the bow were intended to limit the damage from a mine explosion. The outer layer could be destroyed while the others remained intact. The magazines were above water and aft, away from a blast at the bow that could otherwise set off the ship's explosives.
