HMS Dianthus pursued U-379 off Greenland after the submarine had sunk two ships on 8 August 1942. A Canadian corvette briefly joined the ASDIC search, but Dianthus remained after it returned to the convoy and found the damaged U-boat attempting to escape on the surface. Gunfire and a new depth-charge attack forced U-379 up again, after which Dianthus rammed four times before the submarine finally sank. Only five of the U-boat's forty-five crew survived. Every ramming risked detonating torpedoes or explosives aboard the target, making the engagement a contest of persistence with serious danger to both crews.
