Mass-produced Flowers made Atlantic convoy coverage possible

Nearly three hundred Flower-class corvettes supplied the escort mass that let larger warships pursue other tasks without abandoning merchant convoys.

Notes

A total of 284 Flower-class corvettes gave thirteen navies an escort force on a scale that larger warship programs could not quickly match. The design was arguably central to the Battle of the Atlantic because convoy protection demanded hulls in enormous numbers. Without Flowers, Allied navies would have faced a damaging choice between protecting merchant shipping and assigning major warships to carriers, battleships, or hunts for German surface raiders. The corvettes could use scaled-down destroyer equipment, including radar, and draw on existing training and production programs. A simple, supportable hull supplied the numbers needed to protect merchant shipping while larger warships handled other demands.
