Husayn had held lighter craft back to attack after the Portuguese committed to boarding, but Flor de Mar blocked the channel before they could emerge. Disabled vessels then obstructed those behind them, turning a large reserve into a congested target for Portuguese gunners. Caravels and Portuguese galleys attacked the flanks of stationary enemy galleys, where bow- and stern-mounted guns could not answer effectively. Shallow-draft caravels also moved between the ships and shore to cut down coalition crews trying to swim to safety. After the coalition carracks fell, a reinforced Atlantic-style ship near shore resisted until a fleet-wide bombardment sank it at dusk and ended the battle.
