Two early attacks put Flint's defensive system under pressure. Dafydd ap Gruffudd besieged the castle in 1282 but failed to overcome its large killing field. During the 1294 revolt, the castle was threatened again. This time its constable burned the exposed outer area to deny it to the attackers while remaining secure in the stone stronghold. The episodes show the strength of Flint's permanent works and the harsher measures used when a siege reached the site.
