Flint's later history links a medieval succession crisis with the English Civil War. Richard II was held there by Henry Bolingbroke in 1399, giving the castle a place in the transfer of the English crown. Flint then had a comparatively quiet history until Royalists and Parliamentarians contested it in 1647. The resulting siege lasted three months. Roughly 370 years after construction, the castle could still serve as a serious defended position.
