Flint, Rhuddlan, and Hawarden built for speed

The fast construction of James's first three Welsh responsibilities helps explain why Edward entrusted him with a wider castle program.

Notes

Flint was James's primary early responsibility, and he also oversaw work at Rhuddlan and Hawarden. These castles belonged to the first group completed and secured quickly. James continued to move among the sites rather than treating each commission as an isolated project. Speed mattered to Edward I, so reliable delivery gave the king a practical reason to expand James's authority. Construction performance led directly to greater royal confidence and promotion.
