Chapter · 4:39-6:18

Flint's builders and protected harbour

Richard the Engineer began Flint's construction; James of St George took over for seventeen months before moving to Rhuddlan. A wall protected its harbour.

Notes

Flint was built from millstone grit and sandstone. Richard the Engineer began the work, which soon passed to James of St George. James spent seventeen months at Flint before moving to Rhuddlan. The inner ward and outer bailey formed distinct defensive areas, and a wall protected the harbour. Standing on the Welsh shore of the Dee, the castle also helped protect the English shore.
