Chapter · 42:11-46:41

Flight-deck cruisers gain a reconnaissance edge

An after flight deck and hangar let a cruiser scout continuously without the compromises of a seaplane or full-length carrier deck.

Notes

The proposed cruiser retains a conventional gun battery forward while using its after section for helicopters. It avoids the long deck and awkward silhouette of a fixed-wing flight-deck cruiser while preserving useful surface armament. The aircraft can scout beyond visual range, look for mines or submarines, and return without forcing the cruiser to stop. That combination is especially valuable for American ships operating independently across the Pacific and British cruisers hunting surface raiders. Successful deployments would then create a feedback loop in which more aircraft reveal more roles, from transport to minesweeping, and justify still greater investment.
