Gearing torpedo tubes gave way to more antiaircraft guns

The diminishing Japanese surface fleet and growing kamikaze threat changed the value of torpedoes and light antiaircraft weapons.

Notes

Many Gearings had quintuple torpedo tubes removed to make room for more 40 mm guns. Fewer Japanese warships remained as targets for destroyer torpedoes. Kamikaze aircraft were becoming a more pressing danger. The hull had enough space and capacity to accommodate a change in armament as the threat changed.
