The Fletcher-class balance is proposed as a particularly good fit for the Regia Marina's torpedo-centered doctrine. Its substantial torpedo armament preserved the offensive punch Italian planners valued. General-purpose gun mounts could engage aircraft and surface targets, adding the protection that Italy's own destroyers lacked. Italy could therefore retain a substantial torpedo attack while gaining stronger escort capability.
