Chapter · 49:46-53:42

The Fletcher class as a general-purpose warship

The Fletcher class combines a five-gun main battery and torpedoes with the crew and flexibility needed for varied wartime screening and combat duties.

Notes

Fletchers combined five main guns with a substantial torpedo armament and a flexible overall layout. Their varied duties could include minesweeping, anti-submarine work, air defence, and surface action. Those demands required enough crew and equipment to sustain operations without exhausting the people aboard. The class's versatility made it difficult to replace with a more narrowly focused ship. Its practical construction also suited a navy that needed large numbers of destroyers.
