The Fleetwing answered a requirement for a two-seat spotter-reconnaissance aircraft with limited interceptor capability, a mission combination that anticipated later fleet fighters such as the Fulmar. Its single prototype completed preliminary work and deck trials aboard HMS Furious before competing against designs from Blackburn, Short, and Hawker. Test pilots preferred the Hawker Osprey because it maneuvered better, was easier to maintain, resisted seawater intrusion and corrosion, and gave the pilot a safer landing view. The Fleetwing then spent its limited career as a support aircraft for Schneider Trophy work. The episode illustrates how naval suitability and lifecycle burden can outweigh an attractive specification sheet.

The Fleetwing loses when maintainability and visibility decide the contest
A long-nosed spotter-fighter prototype lost to the Hawker Osprey on maneuverability, corrosion resistance, maintenance, and landing visibility.
