Scimitars operated from Ark Royal, Eagle, Victorious, and Hermes, placing the type aboard several of the Royal Navy's major carriers. Its squadrons formed an important part of their air groups despite the high accident rate. When the Buccaneer entered service, Scimitars remained useful as airborne tankers. Refuelling the newer strike aircraft gave the older type a practical fleet role after its original combat position had narrowed.
