Chapter · 24:03-25:54

Asama's intended place beside the battle squadron

The Asama group was designed chiefly for scouting and battle-line support rather than independent commerce raiding or colonial patrol.

Notes

These armored cruisers could protect trade and convoys, but those were secondary capabilities rather than their defining mission. Their armor and heavy guns suited fleet scouting and direct support of the battle squadron. A cruiser opponent might inflict damage yet lose protection and fighting power sooner than Asama did. Even a battleship had to respect the cruiser's heavy broadside and torpedoes rather than assume a risk-free victory. The design makes most sense as a second-line fleet combatant, not as an independent commerce raider or colonial patrol ship.
