Chapter · 5:23-6:24

HMS Invincible and confidence across the naval service

Keith Speed links new ships and weapon systems, especially HMS Invincible, to professional confidence across the Navy and its associated services.

Notes

Speed treats naval manpower as a question of quality and morale as well as headcount. Visits to the fleet and shore establishments showed a confident service that believed it was receiving the right ships and weapons. HMS Invincible had given morale a particular lift. He extends the point across the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service, Women's Royal Naval Service, and the reserves. New equipment, professional identity, and confidence in future capability reinforced one another.
